When you sell your soul to the Devil, you have to know that there will be hell to pay.
In the 1970s the Republicans formed a strategy. Recently brought low by the scandal known as Watergate, they were looking for a way to undo the damage wrought by the hubris which runs deep in their circle. "If we align ourselves with the Devil (aka the Moral Majority/Christian Coalition/Fox News) He will restore our image and we can ride on to the glory of the righteous" went the logic. "He will proclaim our Goodness and the American people will see that it is so. And surely since we are righteous, we are therefore smarter and stronger than He is and can control Him." So they made their pact and invited Him in.
And for almost 30 years it worked: Republicans led this country (either from the White House, or the Congress and Senate.) They led America (and much of the world) into economic ruin. They led us into two pointless wars. They led us into environmental catastrophe after environmental catastrophe. They led us through the destuction and abandoment of an American city. They led us into obesity and illiteracy. They led us to religious intolerance. They led us back to bigotry. They led us into hatred and divisiveness. They led us to the gates of hell.
Now that we're nearly all the way there, the Devil isn't content to ride shotgun anymore. He has decided the time has come to take the reigns and whip the horses into a gallop towards the finish line. He has thrown himself a debutante ball and called it the Tea Party. It's a masquerade dance where he is the only guest but he wears many masks.
